Is Laser Eye Surgery Right for Me?

If you’re considering ditching your glasses or contact lenses, a laser eye surgery consultation is the first step. Spectrum Eyecare & Eyewear offers detailed pre-surgical assessments to help determine if you’re a good candidate.

We don’t perform surgery in-house, but we work closely with trusted surgeons in the region. Our role is to assess, educate, and guide you before and after your procedure to make sure your experience is clear, safe, and successful.

Are You a Good Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser vision correction can be life-changing for many people, but it’s not for everyone. A consultation helps us understand whether laser surgery is the right path forward.

You may be a good candidate if:

  • Your prescription falls within a certain range
  • You’re at least 18 with stable vision
  • You have healthy corneas and no active eye disease
  • You’re not pregnant or nursing

What to Expect from Your Consultation

Your consultation will feel like a very thorough eye exam, focused on long-term vision correction. We’ll review your prescription, check your corneal thickness and shape, assess your tear film, and discuss your lifestyle and vision needs.

Our goal is to make sure your eyes are healthy enough for surgery and answer any questions you may have. This also gives us a chance to set clear expectations. Laser surgery can dramatically reduce your need for glasses or contacts, but doesn’t always result in perfect vision.

If you’re an ideal candidate and decide to move forward, we’ll refer you to a trusted surgeon and provide post-operative care.

Types of Laser Eye Surgery

There are a few different types of laser eye surgery, and the one that’s right for you depends on your eye health, prescription, and lifestyle. During your consultation, we’ll walk you through the options and help you understand how each procedure works.

If you’re looking for a quick recovery or have unique eye health considerations, knowing the differences between LASIK and PRK can help you make an informed decision that feels right for you.

LASIK

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most well-known type of laser eye surgery. A thin flap is created on the cornea and gently lifted so a laser can reshape the underlying tissue. This helps light focus more precisely on the retina, improving vision.

LASIK can offer minimal discomfort and a quick recovery. Many people see improvement within 24–48 hours. It’s a popular choice for those with mild to moderate prescriptions.

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is another effective laser surgery, especially for people with thinner corneas or active lifestyles. Instead of creating a flap, the surgeon removes the cornea’s outer layer before reshaping the tissue underneath. The surface layer naturally regenerates over a few days.

Recovery is typically slower than LASIK and can involve a bit more discomfort, but PRK offers excellent long-term results and is just as safe and effective.

We’re here to make sure you’re fully informed and supported on your laser eye surgery journey. We’ll always guide you with honest advice and thoughtful care because your vision matters to us.
